An eye opener~~ Hotel Rawanda to the Gulf war 1991

Its half past three early in the morning of June 7th 2011 and my eyes are still full. The thoughts of the disasters that happened and may happen is still haunting me. I just cant sleep and am still awake. I prayed for some time and tears crawled down my cheeks as I begged the Almighty that such a drastic thing should never again happen.

My thought took me back to August 2 1990 when I woke up in the evening by a huge sound which shook the building. I didn't know at first what was happening. Me and my sister were alone at home and we just peeped out of the window to see smoke from some buildings. We assumed it might be a gas explosion and were waiting to see if there were any fire engines coming. But none could be seen. After some time my father came in from office and was having a terrified look on his face. He came and enquired if we were safe and if heard any sound. While we were talking a huge sound that shook our building made me and my sister just cry. We could see that the mosque just beside our house was brought to pieces and people running around the streets crying. We could see a few cars in flames too. My father explained to me that it was a missile that hit the mosque and the Iraqis were attacking Kuwait.

All these thought came to my mind right now (7th June 2011) and didn't allow me to sleep after the late night movie "Hotel Rwanda" in Sony Pix. The fight between the Tutsi's and the Hutu's had led to war were millions of Tutsi's were killed. The story shows how a man tries to save his family and around thousand Tutsi people from the rebels. It was so touching that I could not stop thinking of how I and my family tried to escape from Kuwait the same way.

After my Dad made us calm he told us that we need to be quiet all the time and he was trying to call my Mom who was still in the hospital. We couldn't reach her and so kept on trying. After some time my mom called and told that she is safe and there are a lot of soldiers in the hospital and if they allow her and her fellow colleagues to go she will come soon else she will have to stay in the hospital as it was already late and there were lot of problems in the streets. She didn't come that night but early morning she reached and told us that there were a lot of firing all night and lot of soldiers kept coming to the hospital.
We came to know through the news channel that Iraqis had attacked Kuwait and they were killing the Kuwaiti's old and young all alike. They were too rude to them. Most of the Kuwaiti's left Kuwait and the king and his cabinet too. Some were hiding as they could not leave the country.

I and my sister were happy that we needn't go to school. But were equally scared by what was happening. We could hear shots here and there. My mom advised us that if any soldiers come inside we need to hide ourselves under the bed and she had kept many bottles full of chilly so that we could defend ourselves by throwing the chilly on their faces or eyes.

The next day morning an Iraqi came to our house and told he was ready to buy all the household items. My dad agreed as we were planning to leave the country as soon as possible. My cousins were in constant touch with us telling us that some buses would be arranged soon so that we could cross the border.
The Iraqi man didn't pay us well but took everything from our home including my toys which I didn't want to give. Kuwaiti Dinar had lost its value and we could not buy anything with the notes we had. So the Iraqi Dinar came to help.

Through friends and relatives we came to know that the Iraqis were not harming Indians and they were only targeting Kuwaiti's. We all went to together to the shop to buy some food as rumour spread that food would not be available soon as all the shops were closing down and planes were not landing in Kuwait.
On the way to the super market I saw soldiers with huge guns and even a few of them in tankers, they had blocked the roads and the roads were empty. As we crossed by the soldier, I was too scared to look at them thinking they might shoot. They asked something in Arabic, my dad replied something in Arabic and the soldier talked to his fellow soldier and replied back to us in English that we may go. We went to the market and collected all that we could for a week and paid them in Iraqi Dinar.

The next day my Dad's brother called us telling that a few buses were arranged and we have to go to Jordan to catch our flight to India. As there were no flights from Kuwait, Saudi and Iraq, we had to cross Iraq and reach Oman which would be almost 2 days of travel. In the mean time before starting from our place my Dad had to hide our car behind our building because there were already people from Iraq who were stealing cars.
That day night the Iraqi's showed a video to the whole world were Kuwaiti men and women were butchered like animals. Their eyes and tongue were just pulled out. My parents switched off the TV so that me and my sister who were too small to see it would not watch such cruel and inhuman behaviour.

The next day around evening we started our journey with just a few bags as we were advised to carry only very important things. I remember crying because I was not allowed to carry my favourite toys. So we boarded a very crowded bus with half of them being my cousins. I don't remember much of the journey, but yes I still remember there were military trucks going in front and in between the herd of more than 15-20 buses. As it was through the desert, there was no roads as much to say, water was very scarce and  so it was limited.

After a day or two we reached some place in Jordan we were told to camp. I remember I was very happy to see thousands of camps all around and was happy that I could play a lot. But I didn't realise what was about to come. The tents were made for us and we had to lie down on the rocks and sand which was very difficult. In a day a truck would come with food and some fruits. It was mostly tomato's. We stayed there for more than a week and by that time I was sick and was sleeping all the time due to the lack of food.
One night we heard that Indian government had sent us flights and we could leave to the airport in Oman. So we started for the airport and on reaching we saw that we were in a queue of ten thousands waiting already for the flight. Again we stayed at the airport for another 2 days.

On the third day early morning by around 3Am my father came running telling us to pack and start. We suddenly got everything ready and was on our way to the counter. In another few hours we were on our journey back to India.

The flight landed in Mumbai and my father's brother was waiting for us at the Airport. Everyone was happy that we came back alive. Thanks to the Indian government and to lot many people who worked a lot to get all the buses arranged and to take us across the border to safety.

Millions have died in the Gulf war, and I thank god that he just guided us through all the danger and brought us all back to safety.

I could see each and every scene happening in my life as I watched the movie Hotel Rwanda. It was my life were my dad was trying to bring his family to safety.

Will never forget those days as it will and would always be a turning point in my life.

Mummy-- Its my bottle

I just cant stop thinking about this incident. Because it just makes me laugh all the time.
"Thats my bottle, I need it" .
You might be thinking whats the scene. Well its a scene in my office where a guy comes to my cubic and says that he needs his bottle. How funny right?

Well here is how the whole thing starts................

Seeing that there is no water to drink, I go to the pantry to get some. I found that there were a few empty bottles and I took one and filled it. A guy from another team tells me that its his bottle and he was filling all the 7-8 empty bottles to take it back to his cubic. I said that I would get him another empty bottle from my cubic as I already filled this one and didnt want to fill another one. So I come back to my cubic and take a bottle from Shiny's Desk and go back to the pantry and hand it over to this fellow.

Now I come back to my cubic and start working chatting with Shiny and Rajendra. After some time a huge guy around 5'10 comes to me and ask " Did you take my bottle?". I was clueless about what he was talking about. I asked him back "your bottle?". He said , "yes, you just took my bottle from the pantry and I need it"

Everyone around us were stunned by this statement " I want my bottle back"
Shiny took this oppurtunity to get out of the illusion that she is hearing a KinderGarden kid asking for his water bottle. She said " How could you say this is your bottle? Is your name written on it?"

Our huge KG kid replies. I brought it, so its mine. I could not help laughing but tried to be calm and said. "I had given your collegue another bottle, Cant you use that?"
No came the reply. I need my bottle to drink.
(Just to let you guys know-Our office provides bottles at every cubic and bottles keep changing once the office boy fills it and brings it back. So we never get the same bottle at any time and cant claim any bottle as ours. When the office boys dont fill and give water, we do it ourselves)

So understanding his kiddish mind, I told " Your bottle is kept there and please take it"
He is happy like a kid who gets an extra chocolate and grabs his bottle and starts off.

Shiny dint want to leave him like that and she screams " There are a few more bottles over here baby boy. Take these too."
The KG kid leaves happy without even responding to the last sarcastic statement.

Wish I could see the KG kid again back next time for something else.

An office -- Far away from Africa!!!

Dude ball it straight, else I might hit it on the monitors. Its ok, See that you dont hit it too hard
Gosh!! that was a day in office when we used to play cricket in the bay when work was less and everyone would not like to sit idle. Well our bats were the side rails of our cubic and a tenis ball.
The next day our manager would surely call us and ask who broke his cubic, well we would stand as if what on earth is he talking about.(A day in 24/7 customer care)

Thats the environment anyone would enjoy in office and you would love to be in office atleast for the mischeives you do if not for the work. Everyday would be a different day and would be challenging. Thats when I love to work to be true.

When I was part of E4E Pvt limited everyday was really challenging. My manager Jijo Joseph would call out from one side and say, "John, is that customer a lady? Your call has crossed 1 hr". I would reply politely, Customer is King, Jijo!!

Every issue with Symantec would be new and we had to research on it and find solutions. At times research would be on the customers Laptop. I would be installing Symantec and collecting logs of the Virus and the OS to know the issue. The customer would be patient listening to all the technical terms I say and would nod his head not knowing what it really meant. In between he would ask about India, our climate. I remember a client once asking me, "Is your name really John?" I replied."yes, it is"
"Oh ! Is it ?, I never knew there were Christians in India". This gave me a start for our conversations. Well I had to explain to him the religions and castes we have and that there are a lot of christians in India. He then started with his work. How he had a bad day with his wife and how he fought. I had to hear the whole thing as I knew my work on his laptop would really take another hour or so.

At times office is not just work for you. It makes you interact with your clients as if you need to help them out. Just to give you an idea about US customers. They believe that any thing has a reason and if it does not work then is can be fixed by a technician sitting in India. Yes, they have that in mind that all techncial issues land up in India.

I had a VIP customer who was very furious with his previous interaction with a technician and made a call to symantec as per the advice given to him from Microsoft. After he talked to me for a while he mentioned that he had to make 5 calls that day for different issues.
The first call was to HP as his lap top had crashed and the tech sitting in india told him that the OS needs to be re-installed. So he had to fetch the key which he didnt have and so had to make a call to Microsoft which again landed in bangalore. So he got the key which he had to purchase and then call back HP and got it installed. In the mean time he had to cancel his flight as he was getting late with his Laptop. He called the customer service which again landed in India. In the mean time the installation was over and the tech told him that Symanted too needs to be reinstalled as it was uninstalled while the OS was been re-installed. So he told he cant call again anyone else as he cant pay again for symantec softeware which he had purchased recently.
He didnt have any other option at last so he calls symantec and again the call lands in banglore. And unfortunately I had to hear all he had to tell while I assured him he would not be charged for the installation. And all he had to bear was 20 minutes before his laptop would be ready.

So what do you say? The environment is really kind of scary, right? You would not know what would be the issue with your customer calling next.

The office would be like a market where you could hear everyone talking to their customers. And a person comming form outside would think he is in the midst of a busy fish market..lol

My current office is a very silent one with just a tapping of enters here and there. Its kind of boring were you dont see anything much happening. Every day would be the same. The same job running. the same errors and the same clients you call for anything. I have been part of the UFO team for activities and I have found that no one would like to be part of UFO unless they are forced too. UFO is seen as a bunch of people with no work. Well no one understands that the team is trying to work things out to make work more fun. And one thing that does not work out is that all the activities are not part of a team or process, its always an external part. It is treated like a UFO literaly.

I remember the last few months in E4E when I was sent to Chennai as Tech lead for training and and setting up the new Symantec tech team. It was a real challenge. Me, Jijo, Yogesh, Ram, Chethan and a few more was the team ready for training the new team and to start operations of a few processes from Bangalore. Each of us were given different teams and Jijo heading us. Every week Jijo would call us and let us know the status of our teams. Initially things were bad as the new joinees were just starting to pick up. But they were a real energetic group. My team was a real good one. I dont remember most of them, But I remember them looking up to me for any issue.

We started a lot of activities in office. Deepak one of the team leads with lof of ideas suggested many team activities. One of them were anyone who gets a C-Sat from a customer has to shout it out on the floor and we would present him or her with a Cowboy cap which would be passed to the next person who get a C-Sat. The person who gets the most number of C-Sats in a week and month gets awards.

These are activities and models of actions were a person is energised to do something more than he can. He tries his best. And when you try to see things different from the usual way, then you enjoy it.

I know its been a long boring session.. but am sure someone out there would try to do something different in your work place. Think things different and be different to make a better outcome.

Houseboat ~~~ A different world to enjoy

I have a lot of friends who ask me about House boats which are very famous in kerala. Yes its indeed very famous in Kerala.
But most of the people dont know how it works and how would they get to contact people to hire a Boat.
Wouldnt you want to know how big a boat would be and how much would it cost you?

Well do read on to know more about it.. The pic you see is a house boat in which I and my family went for a days trip. It was a single family boat house which had a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and a open are where you could enjoy the whole scenary. Well this was from Alleppey, Kerala that we started the journey and went up till Cochin and back to Alleppey. This Boat house cost was 5000 Indian Rupees in 2009. Now it would be around 7000 to 8000 for a day which includes welcome drink, Lunch and tea. Food is really delicious as they get fresh fish from the sea or from small boats which bring in delicious fishes.
Well you got to see the bedrooms and kitchen too which they provide. Its just awsome with AC rooms too. You feel at home. Thats the main attraction.. You would love to go back and enjoy the beauty once again.

There are many kinds of boats like single Bedroom, double bedroom then 3 bedroom which would cost you 25,000 to 30,000 as per your requirements. They even provide double decker boat houses. It could be used for party purposes.

So what do you think now? Do you mind seeing something the fishermen caught and brought it to our boat?

Now where all could you find house boats in Kerala? You could find it in Alleppey, kerala which is 2 hours from ernakulam and also in Kumarakam which is almost 1.5 hours from ernakulam. Below are a few house boats in Alleppey.

Well hope this helps a bit.. Do post your comments

Hike or Strike... All in a basket of grape!!

You play well today, you will get your hike papers on monday
This was a Quote by one of the commentators in todays AXA IPL match which got over today. Yes its correct ever pig head is waiting for their hike papers.. why is that?

Yes its your own money your waiting for. Its our bread, it is a deciding factor to many things in life and proffession. We have worked the whole 365 days and have been waiting for a day when our manager would call you and say

Man you have done a great work. Here is your Hike papers
The condition in office is more funny than I can express. Everyday you go to office you find your collegue comming up to you and asking. Hey macha any news about the hike papers? Hey Macha what would be the hike percentage this year? Hey dude I have heard your team would get the papers first...
Well thats how people keep waiting for their papers.. Why is this scenario?? any reason to this..
Guys..please put in your comments too over here or your opinion as a comment.. It would help enlighten the thought..

According to me there could be many reasons but the main few reasons are:

1. The company does not pay you well
2. You are waiting to jump according to the pay you get
3. You just cannot live with the current money you get.

There are general thoughts. Now why does the company wait to give the Hike to its employees. Are they not eager to give something back to the employees that helped them?

Reasons could be:

1. The company is just trying to stop you from moving to another company
2. Opening in other companies close by the time I give out the Hike papers(strategy)
3. The company keeps the interest percentage it gets from holding the hike

Now there could be many more reasons for all this.. will discuss about this in details once you guys post in your comments..

Words of love to my wife

Counting in days as you may pass by
walking through the miles as you say
wanting the ages that passed by
because all that I know is your love for me

Fields have been ploughed with the might of strengh
Days could be brightened by the strenght of the sun
Rivers are cleared by the rock and sand
But my love for you has always been a part of my heart

Though its just been a few months
The love that deepens
has always seemed to ripen
like the mountains that are frozen

Would carry you all down through life
till the years have counted mine
and would tie another knot
for you my sweet wife

Virtual Marriage to life.. A concept one should accept

Virtual marriage is something that we think about marriage before we get married itself. Most people live in a life of fantasy before marriage thinking to do things which they have dreamt of doing. Well is that the fact? Never!! Life after marriage and before marriage are different in every ways.
Linju keeps telling to me that before marriage I used to keep telling a lot of things which I never do now. Before marriage people talk a lot and try to be so close that they exagarate to some extent. Its not their fault, they live in a life of fantasy and dreams thinking that they would be like that to their spouce one day.

Now here comes the picture of an arranged marriage and Love marriage. In love marriage couples show all their love and try to be really nice unless they have some serious issues. Now this gives a wrong impression to the partner. Why is this so?

Its simple I wouldnt want to loose the person I love. I would want to be nice to her and give all my love to her. Wouldnt I ?
Now what is the difference between this and an arranged marriage? An arranged marriage if you dont get much time to know your spouse then you dont dream much but might just think what you may be in a couple of days or weeks. Well thats good enough.

Its usually the wives who keep complaining to their husbands about before marriage stuffs
You used to talk to me a lot before marriage now you dont even have time for me. you dont love me at all
This is a general way of expressing that men dont be the same after marriage. Men usually be themselves. They finish their work and if they are tired they just go to sleep unless they are in such good mood for a romance. But it does not mean that they dont love their wife or they dont care. Men dont express much. They see that everything is set for the family rather than the small talks and care which a woman would need a lot.
You dont help me in kitchen with anything. You used to tell me that you would help me and promised me all this before marriage
Men are lazy!! Lady that was just to show you that he loves you a would help you but that does not mean he would be with you the whole time in the kitchen. Just leave him alone and he will come to you when he feels so. Wait for him..

Now what are the complaints that men have to tell?? wait for that ..
